Building a Shopify store: products, design and testing before launch
In this tutorial, I build a store from its initial setup. The recording is from 2025: its promotions and some screens belong to that period. This article preserves the useful sequence and links current documentation for steps that may have changed.

01Prepare a complete product listing
In the video, I start with the product and its variants. An item with several sizes or colours needs consistent configuration for every option, especially inventory. Assigning stock to one size does not mean the others have the same quantity.
Shopify's current documentation places creation and editing under Products. For your first listing, review the title, description, photographs, price, variants and availability. Use your own or authorised images and describe what buyers will actually receive.

02Organise a catalogue people can understand
Product organisation and navigation help people find what they want. Before creating many groups, consider which differences matter to customers: use, product type or a particular collection.
Update since the recording: Shopify is rolling out a collections model combining added products and conditions. Your admin may show different options depending on the rollout. Consult the linked documentation and check which products appear after saving.

03Customise the home and product pages separately
During the tutorial, I distinguish the home page from the product view. They share elements such as header and footer but answer different questions. The home page provides orientation; the listing should help people understand and choose an item.
Review both on mobile. Check whether images show the product clearly, variants make sense and the purchase button is easy to find. An animation or additional block deserves space only when it helps a decision.
04Configure operations before attracting visitors
After design, the recording moves to store configuration and payments. The idea is to prepare the journey before focusing on social media or campaigns. Review business details, sales regions and the terms customers will see.
Do not copy tax or commercial settings from a demonstration without checking what applies to your business. This guide does not determine your obligations or available providers. Use your account's options and the service's specific help.
05Place a test order
Shopify's current guide recommends a test order to check payment, processing, inventory, shipping and taxes. Shopify Payments test mode can simulate successful and failed operations; turn it off before accepting real payments.
As an editorial checklist, also inspect the received email, selected variant, displayed amount and order record. Repeat the review after a significant change. A home page loading correctly does not confirm the whole purchase process.

06Launch a store you can support
The video ends by exploring other management and marketing options. Add them after establishing a clear foundation. Before opening, check public access, contact links and the information buyers need.
I do not assume the introductory promotion or free limits mentioned in 2025 remain valid. Check current prices and terms when signing up. Publishing the store is the beginning: you still need to answer enquiries, handle orders and learn from real visits.
