Shopify collections: organising products and displaying them in your store

In this 2025 class, I organise a small example store using collections. The idea is to help people find the kind of product they want sooner. This article preserves the demonstration's sequence and notes the model change introduced in Shopify's current documentation.

01Decide which grouping helps people shop

A collection brings together products with something in common. In the demonstration, I separate T-shirts and sweatshirts; I also mention seasonal selections and an outlet section. Visitors should be able to understand the grouping.

Before configuring it, write down what someone will expect to find when opening it. A clear name and a suitable image help set expectations. Catalogue organisation should make shopping easier, not merely reflect how you store products internally.

02Distinguish the recording from today's admin interface

The video shows manual and smart collections. Shopify now states that a new collections model is replacing that system and availability depends on the store's admin interface. The current model allows products to be included manually or through conditions.

Use the linked documentation if your admin does not match the tutorial screen. The principle remains useful: decide which products belong to a group and check whether the selection behaves as expected.

03Check rules against specific products

In the class example, I use words from product titles to distinguish T-shirts and sweatshirts. That rule is easy to understand, but names need consistent wording. If you change the catalogue's criteria, also review which products enter each collection.

Run a small check: identify a product that should appear and another that should remain outside. Then verify the result. This helps reveal an overly broad condition or a tag that has not yet been applied.

04Display the collection and review navigation

In the visual part of the video, I add a collection list to the theme and select the images I prepared. I then check that each card leads to the right group. Product selection and storefront presentation are two separate checks.

I also show column and mobile-view settings available in that theme. Options can differ between themes. Finish by browsing the store on a phone: read the titles, open each collection and check that you can return to the catalogue without getting lost.
